To participate in a J1 visa program individuals must be sponsored by an authorized exchange organization and they must meet certain eligibility requirements.

The J1 visa is a non-immigrant visa category that allows individuals to participate in a cultural exchange program in the United States. The J1 visa program is overseen by the US Department of State

Criteria to apply as a trainee

  • Minimum of 21 years of age (no upper limit)
  • A post-secondary degree or certificate and at least one year work experience in career field OR five years work experience in career field.
  • Degree and work experience must be obtained outside of the U.S.

Criteria to apply as an intern

  • 21 years of age preferred
  • Students enrolled in a degree-seeking program related to specific field of placement/career, or
  • Recent graduates who will begin their program within 12 months of graduation
  • Degree must be obtained (or in progress) outside of the U.S.
